Shipwreck is the awful reality of maritime life, but so too is heroism: the heroics of men and women facing shipwreck; the heroics of those who work to save their lives; and the heroics of those who work to warn of danger on the coast. Throughout history men and women have battled against the "hungry sea," and poets and troubadours have sung to remember and to praise their struggles. The songs, like the perils of the sea, are filled with explosive emotions of fear, longing, and ultimately of loss or salvation. The 13th century Scots ballad "Sir Patrick Spens" and Gordon Lightfoot's 1970s "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" tell of loss, but "The Brave Seaman," written in 1928 by Kathleen Clark, a 15 year old sophomore at Pembroke High School, and the daughter of a Pembroke mariner, speaks of the unhesitating willingness to help those facing death at sea, and the early Gospel song "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning," speaks of hope.
The Chantey Sing is led by "From Away Downeast," America's Easternmost Chantey Group, with Susan Sanfilippo (vocal), Stephen Sanfilippo (vocal, banjo, and concertina) and Jim Sherman (vocal and guitar), with the audience invited to join in on the choruses.
The Pembroke Library is located at 221 Old County Road, opposite the horse race track and fair grounds. The June 19 concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call 207-726-4747 or 207-726-4745, or email seasongs@207me.com .

Course Description: Vietnamese Longevity Stick
The "Vietnamese Longevity Stick" regimen incorporates a series of movements designed to improve balance, flexibility, strength, mental focus, breathing capacity and vitality. The exercise, which is done while standing, takes its name from the only piece of equipment used in its practice – a 1-inch-thick dowel that is an inch or two longer than the practitioner's height. The exercise was created in 1981 by Mai Bac Dau, a Vietnamese citizen who survived five years in a communist concentration camp following the fall of South Viet Nam in 1975. Today, the exercise is practiced widely throughout Vietnam, and has spread to the U.S., France, Australia and Canada.
The Longevity Stick has become extremly popular among senior citizens. It is a low impact exercise which can reduce the risk of injuries.
The movements help with balance, flexibility, strength, and breathing techniques.

› Straight Bay
Straight Bay in Lubec lies within Cobscook Bay offering a stunning mix of beautiful views and wildlife. The rocky island shores have a multi-hued patina and eagles nest in greater concentrations here than anywhere else in the state. Harbor seals and gray seals are commonly seen and heard throughout this bay and nearly all the islands in the bay are protected and undeveloped.
And the best way to explore Straight Bay is by kayak. On Friday, June 21, at 8 a.m., the Maine coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) is offering a guided kayak paddle thru Straight Bay to look for seals and eagles. Led by local MCHT steward Melissa Lee and Steve and Tess Ftorek (Cobscook Hikes and Paddles) the paddle will experience Straight Bay's calmness and beauty, while observing the bay’s rich wildlife!
The cost is $50/ person. For directions or additional information and to register for this 3 hour paddle please contact Steve and Tess Ftorek at Cobscook Hikes and Paddles at www.cobscookhikesandpaddles.com.

The Tides Institute & Museum of Art opens its exhibition season on June 21st with an exhibition titled, "The Unknown Coast, 1920s-1930s". Drawn from the institute's permanent collections, the exhibition seeks to counter the impression that art in Maine somehow stops at the mid-coast. In actuality, the eastern coast of Maine and neighboring New Brunswick has always had its own share of artists and there has been a regular ebb and flow of artists along the entire U.S./Canada northeastern seaboard extending to Newfoundland. Over the past decade since its founding, the institute has been systematically assembling a collection that reflects the presence of these artists and that serves to connect this coast to a broader art world.
The exhibition runs through July 17th. The Tides Institute summer hours will also resume on June 21st, Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm.

Come join us Friday, June 21, at 7 p.m. for our Third Friday Coffeehouse at the Cobscook Community Learning Center. Performing will that night will be Live Bait, a way Downeast Maine-based fiddly band, with guitar, bass, drums and accordion or piano, or sometimes banjo. They play rockin' danceable swamp boogie, heavily influenced by the music of Louisiana, Jerry Garcia, Taj Mahal, Woody Guthrie, and Jim Henson.
Live Bait will be performing under the stars in the CCLC's outdoor bandstand, built in memory of Don Furth, an influential figure in the development of the CCLC. It was built in 2008 by Sam Furth and Ajax Oakford Builders using timber frame construction. If viewed from above, the roof is shaped like a hammered dulcimer, the instrument Don Furth loved to play. The bandstand is set at the base of a terraced hill to create an ampitheater. Bring your lawn chairs!
Live Bait has been playing music together in various incarnations for the better part of a decade. They cut their teeth playing traditional string band music at contra-dances at the Trenton Grange and at some point we hit the harder stuff. Founding members Sheila Unvala (fiddle), Sepp Huber (piano, accordion, banjo) and Curtis Russet (guitar) hail from Steuben, at the mouth of the mighty Tunk Stream, Tom Boutureira (drums) is from Machias and Don Roberto Sanchez (bass) comes from Perry.
To get a taste of Live Bait's music, check out this clip of the group playing "Hot Tamale" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQzBx2hWmGc&feature=youtu.be
Admission for this event is by donation, which goes to the featured performers. We will offer an open-mic segment for audience participants wishing to take the stage. Coffee, tea and homemade treats will be for sale. The Cobscook Community Learning Center is an alcohol-free campus.

We are a new, two-country, cross-border marathon between the USA and Canada. Please join us for an event that features the best of Downeast Maine and the Atlantic Maritimes, lobsters included. The race weekend includes a companion 10K, a community breakfast and fun run, a pasta and lobster dinner, and an after-race street party.
The Marathon is a combination point-to-point (West Quoddy Head to Lubec) and out-and-back (from the FDR memorial bridge to Head Harbour lighthouse and back). Starting at the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the gently rolling course offers miles of water and harbor views. Crossing from the USA to Canada by way of the FDR Memorial Bridge, the course takes runners past the FDR Summer Home in the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, through the scenic fishing villages of Welshpool and Wilsons Beach, to reach the northern tip of Campobello Island at the Head Harbour Lighthouse (also called East Quoddy Head). The course then turns and retraces its steps back along the entire length of Campobello, back across the bridge into the USA, and finishes along Water Street at the Lost Fishermen's Memorial Park, in the heart of Lubec.

Three week long camps: June 24 - 28, July 22 - 26 and August 19 - 23. Spend a week learning vital wilderness survival skills while exploring Maine's outdoors! Have fun logging miles, achieving great heights, and adding new capabilities. Have fun this summer with the Outdoor Adventure Camps on the trails, waterways, and mountains!
The CCLC's Outdoor Adventure Camp is offered to youth of all skill levels. No previous outdoor/wilderness experience required.
We'll help your child learn essential wilderness survival skills, create new friendships, increase self awareness and confidence, and fun memories to last a lifetime. Campers will learn about appropriate clothing, footwear, back packs and other gear, and how to prepare for outdoor experiences (some gear may be available to borrow).
Kids will participate in daily morning instruction followed by afternoon adventuring. Kids are invited to join our camp with a strong desire to learn and explore, while showing respect for fellow camp members, expedition leaders and, most importantly, the environment.
Transportation: possible carpooling can be arranged from Calais and Machias, depending on number of students enrolled. Bussing available for $20 per week.
There will be two instructors.
Bobbi-Jo Bourdeau of Washington County graduated in 2012 from the University of Maine at Machias with a BS in Outdoor Recreational Management and a minor in Psychology. She and her son live in Jacksonville and together enjoy being outside as much as possible. You can usually find them in a tent, on a bike, in a boat, up a mountain, or around a campfire.
Michael Giudilli was born in Oswego, New York, on the shores of lake Ontario and is a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Machias Environmental Recreation and Tourism Management Program. He has gathered a great deal of work experience in the outdoor education field, including as the Assistant program director at Greenland Point Center, as an education intern for the National Park Service, and as the program director for the Deer Lake Wilderness School in Killingworth, Conn. These work experiences, along with Michael's extensive outdoor experiences on have spurned my passion for outdoor education.

The Pembroke Historical Society's June 24 meeting will feature a presentation by Dr. Robin Hadlock Seeley on "The Cobscook Bay Fisheries Oral History Project." The project, funded by a National Audubon + Toyota "TogetherGreen Innovation Grant" and the Eastern Maine Conservation Initiative, taps traditional ecological knowledge with the Cobscook Bay community, bringing together local fisheries and coastal workers, public libraries, and other local resources. Included among these community partners for the project were students from Pleasant Point, Whiting and Lubec who, under the guidance of Dr. Robin Hadlock Seeley and filmmaker David Owen Brown, and using high definition video cameras, recorded the stories and memories of their community elders. For the Pembroke Historical Society program on June 24, Dr. Seeley will present a "rough cut" of the students' film, and discuss the merger of the arts, history, and ecology in the project.
To program, to be held at the Pembroke Historical Society's museum on Monday, June 24, at 7 p.m., is open to the general public, and is ideal for adults and for high school and middle school students. Set in Los Angeles in the late 1930s, Roman Polanski's classic "Chinatown" was one of the first modern films to consciously evoke the bygone era of film noir. Jack Nicholson stars as the sharp-tongued private eye hired by Faye Dunaway to investigate her cheating husband. This routine case of adultery quickly becomes a tangle of deceit, corruption and treachery, and nothing is as it appears. Robert Towne's Oscar-winning screenplay, still hailed as one of the finest ever written and a model that aspiring screenwriters study and attempt to emulate, pays loving homage to, while also slyly undercutting, many of the dictates of the hard-boiled detective story.
Inscrutable, to be sure, and a wonderfully entertaining motion picture, "Chinatown" will be screened by the St. Andrews Film Society on Monday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the W.C. O'Neill arena theatre. All are welcome, and admission is free. Donations are gratefully accepted.
This 1974 production has a running time of 130 minutes, and is rated R, with English subtitles.

The Grand Manan Art Gallery is pleased to announce Archipelago: String of Islands by the SilverFish Photography Collective. Opening reception is planned for Saturday, June 29, at 7 p.m. The show runs from June 29 to July 18.
In its artistic statement SilverFish Photography Collective states: "All islands have two shores; the near and the far. Where you see yourself depends on a personal perspective. The near shore is comfortable, known, home. The far shore is strange, unexplored, away. We venture both to and from islands in escape, seeking or fleeing isolation, always hoping for peace, and looking for ourselves. Islands are inhabited by families, and are often made better by friends. SilverFish invite you to traverse these visual spaces which are conceptual, geographical, and physical which exist between our string of island perspectives; our archipelago."
SilverFish came into being in order that some 8 to 14 graduates of the Photography programmes at the NBCCD (including Grand Manan's own Lori (Morse) Quick) might have a forum for artistic stimulation and a place to practice their craft in a collective atmosphere. All members have worked with 35mm photography. As well, all have worked with medium and large format, and even pinhole cameras. The name SilverFish, with all its photographic implications, was adopted in 2001.
We invite you to attend and enjoy this exciting exhibition.

She was the assistant director of MWR for the United States Navy, established local youth leadership groups as an AmeriCorps volunteer, and has worked in many local schools and with many local nonprofit organizations.
Time: 9 am – 4 pm
Ages: clubs are open to youth age 7 – 12, of all skill levels. No previous experience in the outdoor/wilderness environment is required.
Class fee: $200 per week. Scholarships are available

She was the assistant director of MWR for the United States Navy, established local youth leadership groups as an AmeriCorps volunteer, and has worked in many local schools and with many local nonprofit organizations.
Time: 9 am – 4 pm
Ages: clubs are open to youth age 7 – 12, of all skill levels. No previous experience in the outdoor/wilderness environment is required.
Class fee: $200 per week. Scholarships are available
