St. Crois Valley Amateur Radio Club Annual Field Day
Raising the triband antenna at last year's field day.
Public Meeting
Saturday, June 27
- Sunday, June 28 2:00 pm - 2:00 pm (ET)
Charlotte - Alexander School Parking Lot
The members of the St. Crois Valley Amateur Radio Club will hold their annual Field Day at the Alexander School parking lot on Rte. 9 from Saturday, June 27th, 2 pm. to Sunday, June 28th, 2 pm. The club members will be putting the final touches on the plans for towers, radios, cables, generators, etc. and the set-up activities, which will begin on Friday afternoon and completed Saturday by 2 pm., when transmission can begin. The club will earn points with the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), which sponsors the competition among the amateur radio operators' clubs. They earn points for all of the equipment used, the number of radio contacts made, the participation of young people and non-licensed, interested visitors who make a supervised radio contact.
The purpose of the annual national Field Day activities is to practice how to set up quickly for transmission, so that amateur radio operators will be experienced in doing so, should an emergency occur in which they could assist with communications. For instance, "hams" (as they are called) have assisted in times when power and phone lines are down due to weather or some other disaster.
If you're out on Rte. 9 during these exercises, you would be most welcome to stop in and see what's going on. The operators won't be too busy to show you around and let you in on the world of amateur radios and their operators. You may even get "bitten by the bug" that has infected these men, and some women, too. It's interesting, useful, as well as a lot of fun.
The club's regular meetings are the second Sunday of each month at the Wichachee Restaurant in Calais at 7 am. and the third Sunday of each month for the monthly business meeting at 6:30 pm at the Methodist Homes' meeting room in Calais. Visitors are always welcome. Contact Mike Sanford at 427-3058 for further information.
